NotebookLM, now branded Gemini Notebook, is very good at what it was built for: grounding answers in sources you supply and pointing back at the exact quotes. When people go looking for something else it is rarely because that part failed. It is because they wanted a different output.
Published round-ups of user discussion surface the same handful of complaints repeatedly: Audio Overviews land in a fairly narrow length band and cannot be stretched, the same two voices wear thin with repeat use, and the format always talks about your material rather than delivering it.
So before you pick a replacement, name your limit.
You need a narration tool, not a discussion generator. This is the clearest case for Loudly, which reads the full text and keeps it in a listening library. Speechify and dedicated paper-readers also do straight narration.
Audio Overview length is not something you control. A full-text reader has no such ceiling: a 40-page PDF becomes however long 40 pages takes to speak.
If voice variety is the issue, look at tools with large voice catalogues. Speechify advertises 1000+ voices across 60+ languages on its paid tier.
Language quality varies enormously between tools, and a big language count says nothing about how any one of them sounds. Test the language you actually read in.

If what you value is asking questions of a source set and getting answers with citations, no tool on this page replaces that, including Loudly. NotebookLM has a free tier and accepts YouTube videos, audio files and Google Slides.
A lot of people end up using two tools rather than one: something to understand hard material, and something to get through the pile of material they already understand and simply have not read.
