Listening to research papers, without pretending it replaces reading

Nobody who does this seriously thinks audio replaces reading a paper properly. You cannot skim back a paragraph by ear, you cannot see the figure, and you certainly cannot check a regression table. What audio does is triage - and triage is where most paper queues actually fail.

The queue problem is a filtering problem

The backlog is rarely forty papers you must know in depth. It is forty papers of which perhaps five matter to your argument, and the expensive part is finding out which five. That filtering step is what gets postponed, and postponing it is what makes the pile feel unmanageable.

Filtering does not need a desk. It needs enough of each paper to make a decision. That is a job audio does well, in time you were not using anyway.

A triage workflow that holds up

  1. Summarise the batch. Convert ten papers to spoken summaries. Cheap in credits, and it is roughly an hour of walking.
  2. Sort as you listen. Most papers resolve into read properly, cite and move on, or not relevant, within the first two minutes.
  3. Narrate the shortlist. The handful that matter get full narration, so you arrive at your desk already knowing the argument.

Be realistic about what audio cannot do here

  • Figures, plots and tables carry much of a paper's evidence and none of it survives narration.
  • Equations do not read aloud usefully in any tool.
  • You cannot re-read a sentence by ear the way your eye does automatically.
  • Reference lists read literally are noise - convert sections rather than whole files.

Can I listen to a paper instead of reading it?

How does it handle citations and references?

They are text, so a literal narration includes them. Converting only the sections you want, or using a spoken summary, gives a much cleaner listen.

Does it pronounce technical terms correctly?

Mostly, but specialist vocabulary and author names are where any text-to-speech system is weakest. Convert one paper from your field before buying a large credit pack.

Is this better than NotebookLM for papers?
